ABOUT THE PROGRAM
All are welcome to participate in this free Book Club for the novel Giovanni’s Room by renowned American writer and Civil Rights activist James Baldwin (1924–1987). Baldwin’s extensive body of work—spanning essays, speeches, plays, poetry, short stories, and novels—fearlessly tackled racial and social issues, offering profound insights into the Black American experience in the 20th century.
The author’s 1956 novel, Giovanni’s Room, is about an American man living in Paris and his relationships with other men, particularly an Italian bartender named Giovanni, whom he meets at a gay bar.
This Book Club for Giovanni’s Room is part of “James Baldwin at 100″— an initiative of One Book One Bronx & The Literary Freedom Project that will celebrate a century since the author’s birth with discussions, panels, screenings, and exhibitions. The Bronx Museum is proud to serve as a host location for this initiative and other One Book One Bronx Book Clubs!
