Artist Statement

Cut, tear, paste, stitch: Through methods of painting, printmaking, and installation, Zakariya Abdul-Qadir collects source images (archival mining)— disassembling the narrative — to reflect a through line connecting a culture of Blackness and America. By mimicking the properties of collage, Abdul-Qadir layers and omits information on a plane, collapsing the present day and history of the American landscape simultaneously on the surface.
