Beginning in summer 2026, The Bronx Museum is expanding beyond our walls and into our surrounding neighborhood through the Meet Me At The Park series!
For this iteration of Meet Me At The Park, artist Jill Cohen-Nuñez is collaborating with participants in the Museum’s Teen Summer 2026 program (a paid arts internship for NYC high school students) to lead a free wood-carving workshop for all ages in Joyce Kilmer Park—located just one block south of the Museum on Grand Concourse.
Participants in the workshop, titled Objects of Importance, will be introduced to the basics of hand-carving softwood. All are welcome to join in and learn about wood identification and safe wood carving techniques! Please Note: sharp tools will be used, and an adult should accompany young children.
The Objects of Importance workshop is inspired by Cohen-Nuñez’s artistic practice that connects the physical landscape and the spiritual realm. The artist completed the Museum’s prestigious AIM Fellowship (a career accelerator program for the most talented ascendant artists based in NYC) in 2025 and is currently exhibiting the piece untitled (ojos) in our North Wing gallery as part of The Seventh AIM Biennial: Forms of Connection exhibition.
About Jill Cohen-Nuñez
Jill Cohen-Nuñez (b. 1992) is a Dominican-American artist from The Bronx, NY. They are a recipient of The Bronx Museum’s 2025 AIM Fellowship. In 2024, they were named the Devra Freelander Artist Fellow at Socrates Sculpture Park and were awarded a New York Community Trust Van Lier fellowship at Wave Hill in 2023.
They have received grants and scholarships from Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, the Connor Merit Awards, Urban Glass, the Oki Doki Studio, and an NYFA City Artist Corps Grant. Cohen-Nuñez has participated in residencies at Haverford College, The Newark Print Shop, Manhattan Graphics Center, MASS MoCA, Chashama, and Modern Art Foundry.
They have exhibited at the National Sculpture Society, BronxArtSpace, Center for Performance Research, Fordham University, BAAD! Bronx Academy of Art and Dance, The New York Botanical Garden, the Jane Hartsook Gallery at Greenwich House, and EFA Project Space. They hold a BA in Studio Art from CUNY City College.
About 'Untitled (ojos),' 2026
Pine, walnut, soapstone

Referencing the iconography of the Christian St. Lucy, said to have had her eyes removed, and other imagery of eyes as shields and guardians, this sculpture by Jill Cohen-Nuñez is a protector to defend against mal de ojo (the evil eye). Its use of natural materials, including stones from Pelham Bay Park, connects the physical landscape to the spiritual realm.
