ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The Bronx Museum is partnering with Storefront for Art and Architecture to bring Public Address to The Bronx—the borough with the highest number of shelters in New York City.
Conceived by Alex Strada, the inaugural Public Artist in Residency with the NYC Department of Homeless Services and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Public Address platforms the perspectives of people living and working in shelters on signage produced by the NYC Department of Transportation—amplifying voices too often overlooked and demonstrating how civic infrastructures can be reimagined to foster dialogue across social strata.
A central installation will be on view at Joyce Kilmer Park beginning September 14, 2026, accompanied by additional signage throughout the borough. Project components will also be on view at The Bronx Museum beginning October 9, 2026.
Public Address debuted in Manhattan in 2025 before traveling to Brooklyn. Following its presentation in The Bronx, the project will continue to Staten Island before concluding with a final presentation in partnership with the Queens Museum at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in March 2027.
About Alex Strada
Alex Strada is a New York City-based interdisciplinary artist whose socially engaged work reimagines systems of power and creates platforms for collectivity and transformation. Working across sculpture and installation, video, photography, archives, and public practice, her projects are often long-term, unfolding through sustained collaborations that guide both their process and form. Since 2022, Strada has served as the Public Artist in Residence with the New York City Department of Homeless Services and the Department of Cultural Affairs.
Recent solo exhibitions and public art commissions include Storefront for Art and Architecture; Bronx Museum of Art; Queens Museum; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; Project Row Houses; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum; and Times Square Arts. Selected group exhibitions and screenings include Aurora Biennial; BIENALSUR; Fondazione Antonio Ratti; Museum of the Moving Image; Socrates Sculpture Park; MuseumsQuartier Wein; and Kaunas Biennial.
Strada’s work has been featured in The New Yorker, The New York Times, BOMB, The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, and WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer Show. Her practice has been supported by grants and fellowships from the Graham Foundation, Artadia, NYFA, NYSCA, and Rema Hort Mann Foundation, and through artist residencies at the Wexner Center for the Arts, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Pioneer Works, and Headlands Center for the Arts. Strada holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University and was a studio participant in the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program. She is Visiting Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute and Charles C. Bergman Endowed Visiting Professor in Studio Art at Stony Brook University.
