About the Exhibition

This exhibition features artwork created by students in our School Partnerships Program. Students visited the exhibition Ministry: Reverend Joyce McDonald, learned about the artist’s intuitive approach to clay-based sculpture, and created artwork that depicts notions of home, family, self-identity, and friendship.

Reverend Joyce McDonald describes herself as a testimonial artist, using sculpture to share her life story and honor the people who have shaped it. Her work often depicts loved ones, lost lives, and emotions such as gratitude, hopelessness, and belonging.

Through prompts that explored these themes of personal identity and community, students from five Bronx-based public schools learned to use air-dry clay as a storytelling tool, molding and shaping the clay onto tiles to narrate a personal testimony expressing who they are. These tiles were meant to be arranged alongside others to reflect the multitude of experiences that students had while connecting with Reverend Joyce McDonald’s artwork.

About School Partnerships

The Bronx Museum’s school partnerships are deep collaborations with local partner schools in which students experience the Museum, develop collaborative skills, and create art. These programs connect the Museum’s exhibitions to students’ coursework and their own creative making.
