The Bronx Museum invited artist Marco Saavedra to create an altar for our Dia de Muertos celebration on Saturday, November 1.
You are invited to drop off objects and photographs for the altar anytime during the Museum’s hours: Wednesday – Sunday, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
The purpose of this altar is to collectively imagine a new world that is based on compassion for others and connection to nature and ancestry.
The altar, along with its surrounding programming, invites the community to paint flowers, leave votive images, and break bread. Through these shared acts, we exercise our freedom to choose the “miracle of love” over the “death of the heart.”

About Marco Saavedra
Marco Saavedra serves as host and painter at La Morada Mutual Aid Restaurant. Originally from La Mixteca Baja, he reconnected with his family through the southern border in 1993. After infiltrating two detention centers, Saavedra received political asylum in 2021 following 10 years in removal procedures, setting a precedent for activists like himself. This work with the National Immigrant Youth Alliance is featured in the Sundance award-winning documentary, “The Infiltrators” (2019).
